Rachel Hargrove

Owner & Licensed Massage Therapist

When did you join the Height of Health Team?

I started the business in May of 2014 with the idea of offering affordable massage therapy while paying and treating therapists well.

What inspired you to become a massage therapist?

I received my first massage when I was 14 and loved it! Years later, I sort of fell into the idea of massage therapy. I thought it might be a stepping stone into another medical focused career. However, I found that I loved massage therapy and stayed with it!

Where did you attend massage school?

I attended The Academy of Natural Therapy in Greeley. It was 1000 hour program and the teachers were excellent. I received a lot of hands on work, and since the classes were small, I received one on one attention.

When did you complete your massage program?

I completed my massage program in early 2011.

Was there an event or situation that you find has made you a better massage therapist?

I find that experience and seeing a diversity of different populations has helped me to become a better massage therapist and better listener. I have worked at many different locations from spas to physical therapy offices. I have seen clients who want to simply sleep and relax, to clients dealing with chronic issues like MS, to clients who have had strokes or hindering accidents. I find that listening and seeing each person as an individual is a learning opportunity for growth.

What did you think you’d be when you grew up when you were 8?

I wanted to be a musician! As a kid, I loved playing piano and singing in choir. I first began as a music major in college when I attended UNC, and I even dabbled in opera. I still love to play music and perform, but I don’t often get the chance.

Favorite Fort Collins related activity?

I love walking to breweries with my husband and fur pup Jaime, or going to the dog park and watching him run like crazy!

Hobbies?

I don’t have any… light easy office work while watching TV. Does that count?

What are three values that you hold across different dimensions of your life?

I value hard work and the feeling of accomplishment. One of my greatest fears, like many people, has always been failure. This fear has motivated me to work harder, meet goals, and push through any obstacles standing in my way. I feel happy and content when I know I have accomplished what I have set out to do or more.

Favorite book, movie, and/or TV series?

“The Go-Giver” is an inspirational business/life book that has greatly influenced how I run the business and operate. It is the idea of giving without seeking something in return, and that doing good things will lead to a good and fulfilling life. I have too many favorite TV series to choose from! I typically like dramas or dark comedies.

Historical figure you’d like to have coffee or a drink with?

This is a hard one for me. I will return to this!

Favorite outdoor or physical activity?

Same as brewery/dog park answer. I’m not an outdoorsy person.

When did you join the Height of Health Team?

I joined Height of Health Massage in April Of 2016. I had worked in the spa environment before joining Height of Health. Although that was a wonderful learning experience for me, I was excited to work for a company that offered medical massage and accepts insurance.

What inspired you to become a massage therapist?

Growing up I always had a hard time figuring out what a good career path would be for me. I knew that I wanted to work in a healthy environment and wasn’t particularly cut out for an office position. I started to consider massage when I was working at a health club. After looking into massage as well as receiving a few I knew that massage would be a good fit for me. It has turned out to be one of my best decisions I’ve made for myself.

Where did you attend massage school?

I attended A New Beginning School of Massage in Austin Texas. Living in Texas and going to school for massage was a very exciting time for me. I had wonderful teachers and a solid foundation in technique as well as classroom time that made me feel confident in pursuing a job as a Massage Therapist.

When did you complete your massage program? I completed my schooling in February of 2015.

Are you specialized in any particular modality of massage therapy?

While in school I had the opportunity to take an additional class in warm stone massage. It was an 8-hour class that offered hands on training. I was able to practice on other classmates as well as to receive a warm stone massage. It was a wonderful experience that I still benefit from today.

Was there an event or situation that you find has made you a better massage therapist?

I feel as though my first year out of school and working full time is really where I gained some great experience. Learning how to listen to the client’s needs, whether it’s pressure levels, specific areas, or if they wanted to talk or be silent. For me there is no better way to learn then hands on experience. By doing so and being able to listen to people, I feel that has made me a better therapist.

What did you think you’d be when you grew up when you were 8?

As a child I wanted to be an art or gym teacher. I wanted to play, have fun and enjoy what I was doing. I was constantly in a sports league ranging from baseball to crew, but soccer was my favorite and the sport I played the longest. I still enjoy being active, although I’ve shifted from kicking the soccer ball around to practicing yoga and mountain biking.

Favorite Fort Collins related activity?

I love getting out and mountain biking. I recently got a new mountain bike for my birthday and it's been a lot of fun testing it out on the trails.

Hobbies?

When I’m not being a typical Coloradoan and playing outside; I love practicing yoga and barre. They have been wonderful additions to my lifestyle and I’m excited to see where my practice takes me.

What are three values that you hold across different dimensions of your life?

I really value compassion. I feel like with this day and age and with getting older it is so easy to become critical and hardened. So, having compassion for others is something I hold very close. Because of this not only does it help me in my daily life but also in my job. I feel you must be compassion to be a good massage therapist.

Favorite book, movie, and/or TV series?

There have only been a handful of books that I’ve picked up and read cover to cover in one go. Two of those are “The Alchemist” and “Love Warrior”. Both of those books touched my soul and I was sad when I had finished them. I read them when I was at different points in my life and I feel like they were defining novels for me. I love finding a good series to binge on when I have the time. I love true crime, comedies, and my all time go to is the Gilmore Girls. I can watch that series anytime and it never gets old…..it just makes me want to move to Stars Hallow.

Historical figure you’d like to have coffee or a drink with?

I don’t think he’ll count as a historical figure but Morgan Freeman. I could listen to that man read the ingredients to dish soap and be thrilled.

Licensed Massage Therapist

When did you join the Height of Health Team?

I joined Height of Health Massage in October 2016.

What inspired you to become a massage therapist?

I was interested in pursuing physical therapy at one point, and I thought that massage would offer an excellent stepping stone for learning human anatomy, and manual therapy. Above all, I knew I wanted to complete higher education and I felt that massage would be a flexible career to have while doing so. I have since decided not to pursue PT, and am currently working toward other career goals that align with the massage world.

Where did you attend massage school?

The Healing Arts Institute in Fort Collins, Colorado

When did you complete your massage program?

February 2016

Are you specialized in any particular modality of massage therapy?

I have additional training in treating TMJD, tension headaches, and scoliosis. Specifically, I am trained in a proprietary form of neuromuscular therapy. I do a lot of focus work for neck and shoulder dysfunction. While this is my specialty, I will always adapt any session to my clients’ needs whether that be Swedish relaxation, deep tissue, trigger point therapy, myofascial techniques, or prenatal massage.

Was there an event or situation that you find has made you a better massage therapist?

I have dealt with a lot of neck/shoulder pain, and tension headaches over the years. My experience with trying to find relief from these problems has given me insight into helping my clients with similar problems from a space of empathy and understanding. Headaches can be debilitating, and neck pain can limit us in various aspects of our lives. I get this wholeheartedly, and am always eager to help my clients dealing with this type of dysfunction.

What did you think you’d be when you grew up when you were 8?

I think at this point in my life I was convinced I would be an author. I loved writing, and thought that I would complete a book before the age of 18. Why 18, you ask? So that I could go on Oprah before she went off the air and talk about my publication.

Favorite Fort Collins related activity?

Nothing makes me happier than watching the sunset from Duncan’s Ridge. I also love driving up the Poudre Canyon, hanging out at the river, and having lunch at The Mishawaka.

Hobbies?

I really enjoy hiking, climbing, [attempting] trail running, camping, weight-lifting, reading, traveling, and hanging out with my loved ones. I am pretty busy with school and work these days, but I try to indulge in any of these as much as I can!

Dolly Parton, hands down. I’ve wanted her to adopt me since I was 7.

Favorite outdoor or physical activity?

Hiking, climbing, eating, reading. Basically, anything outdoors in Colorado is great. I am from Texas and the heat is so awful down there you can’t do as much outside. I am always down for anything outdoors as long as I am here in FoCo.
